Pre-Columbian Cities of the Americas

Ancient cities and ceremonial centers built before the arrival of Europeans in the Americas, including the Maya city of Chichen Itza, the Andean citadel of Machu Picchu and the great city of Teotihuacan. A monument belongs here when the cited article places it in ancient Mesoamerica or the Andes. It excludes Old World monuments. The group follows the region the cited article names. All three flourished long before European contact, and each is a major archaeological site with temples, plazas, terraces and streets planned on a large scale. Later colonial buildings on the same sites are not placed here.
