The Rooks Have Returned

Landscapes and Still Lifes

The Rooks Have Returned, known in Russian as Grachi Prileteli, is an 1871 oil-on-canvas landscape by the Russian painter Alexei Savrasov, measuring 62 by 48.5 centimeters and held in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. It shows the first signs of a Russian spring: rooks settling into birch trees above melting snow, with a village church and bell tower visible in the distance. Pavel Tretyakov bought the painting in the summer of 1871 for 600 rubles, and it was shown that November at the first exhibition of the Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions, where it was singled out for praise, including by the painter Ivan Kramskoi, who said it was the one landscape in the show that had a soul. It is regarded as Savrasov's most famous work and a landmark in the development of Russian landscape painting.
