Tragedies by William Shakespeare, written around the turn of the seventeenth century. A play belongs here when the cited article names Shakespeare as the author and calls the play a tragedy. Shakespeare wrote these tragedies in verse for the London playhouses, and they show noble figures undone by ambition, doubt and misjudgment. It excludes his comedies, histories and romances, and tragedies by other playwrights of his age. They remain among the most staged and studied plays in the English language.
