Moses Leaving for Egypt

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

Moses Leaving for Egypt is a fresco painted around 1482 by the Italian Renaissance artist Pietro Perugino and his workshop, part of the fresco cycle in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Measuring 350 by 572 centimeters, it shows the prophet Moses departing for Egypt after his exile from Midian, accompanied by his wife Zipporah, with an angel instructing him to circumcise his son Eliezer and a further scene showing that circumcision taking place. In the background the painting also shows Moses and Zipporah greeting her father Jethro before their departure, set against a landscape of hills, sparse trees and shepherd figures.
