An elliptical amphitheatre in the center of Rome, begun under the Emperor Vespasian around 70 CE and completed under his son Titus in 80 CE, capable of holding tens of thousands of spectators for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. It remains the largest amphitheatre ever built and a defining symbol of Imperial Rome.
