Time-lapse photography is a technique in which frames are captured at a much lower rate than the rate at which the resulting sequence is played back, so that when the images are shown in succession at normal speed, a process that occurs slowly in real time, such as a flower opening, clouds moving, or a construction project progressing, appears dramatically compressed and sped up. Used since the early twentieth century in scientific and nature filmmaking to reveal motion and change invisible to the eye at normal viewing speed, time-lapse became far more accessible with digital cameras and built-in intervalometers, and it remains widely used in nature documentaries, architectural and construction records, and artistic filmmaking.
