Alfred Stieglitz (1864 to 1946) was an American photographer and promoter of modern art whose fifty year career was instrumental in making photography an accepted art form. Beyond his own photography he was known for the New York art galleries he ran in the early twentieth century, where he introduced many avant garde European artists to the United States. He was married to the painter Georgia O'Keeffe.
