Anna Magnani was an Italian actress who lived from 7 March 1908 to 26 September 1973 and was the first Italian woman to win an Academy Award. Raised in Rome, she worked her way through the city's Academy of Dramatic Art by singing in night clubs, and after her first screen role in The Blind Woman of Sorrento in 1934 she achieved international attention in Roberto Rossellini's Rome, Open City in 1945, a film seen as launching the Italian neorealism movement in cinema. Known for her dynamic, forceful portrayals of earthy, lower class women in films including L'Amore, Bellissima, The Rose Tattoo and Mamma Roma, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Rose Tattoo, a role the playwright Tennessee Williams wrote specifically for her.
