Gabriel Faure

Composers

Gabriel Urbain Faure was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher who lived from 1845 to 1924, one of the foremost French composers of his generation, whose musical style influenced many twentieth-century composers. Among his best-known works are the Pavane, the Requiem, the Sicilienne, nocturnes for piano and the songs Apres un reve and Clair de lune. Born into a cultured but not especially musical family, he was sent at age nine to the Ecole Niedermeyer music college in Paris, where he trained as a church organist and choirmaster under teachers including Camille Saint-Saens, who became a lifelong friend. By his last years he was recognized in France as the leading French composer of his day, and an unprecedented national musical tribute was held for him in Paris in 1922, headed by the president of the French Republic.
