Giuseppe Verdi was an Italian composer whose operas dominated the Italian stage for more than half a century and remain central to the international repertoire. Beginning with early successes such as Nabucco, he went on to write Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, La Traviata, Aida, and the late masterpieces Otello and Falstaff, works prized for their dramatic directness, memorable melody, and increasingly sophisticated orchestration and characterization. Verdi's operas were closely bound up with Italian national feeling during unification, and choruses such as Va, pensiero from Nabucco became popular expressions of patriotic sentiment, making him a figure of cultural as well as musical importance in nineteenth-century Italy.
