Praxiteles

Sculptors

Praxiteles of Athens, son of Cephisodotus the Elder, was the most renowned of the Attic sculptors of the fourth century BC and the first to sculpt the nude female form as a life sized statue. No sculpture securely attributable to him survives, but numerous ancient copies of his works are known, several ancient authors including Pliny the Elder wrote about his work, and coins engraved with silhouettes of his famous statuary types still exist.
