August Sander (1876 to 1964) was a German portrait and documentary photographer whose first book, Face of Our Time, was published in 1929. He has been described as the most important German portrait photographer of the early twentieth century, and although his work spans landscape, nature, architecture and street photography, he is best known for his portraits, exemplified by his series People of the Twentieth Century, in which he aimed to show a cross-section of society during the Weimar Republic.
