Baccio Baldini

Printmakers, Calligraphers and Graphic Artists

Baccio Baldini was an Italian goldsmith and engraver of the Renaissance, active in his native Florence from about 1436 until his burial on 12 December 1487. Giorgio Vasari calls him a pupil of the goldsmith Maso Finiguerra and says he based his works on designs by Sandro Botticelli. He is best remembered for the first printed Dante of 1481, where the painter is believed to have supplied drawings for Baldini to turn into engravings. He has long been credited as the leading practitioner of the Florentine Fine Manner of engraving, a group of more than 100 prints marked by sharp outlines and fine cross-hatching.
