Balkrishna Doshi

Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi was an Indian architect who lived from 1927 to 2023 and is recognized as a central figure in Indian architecture. Born in Pune, he worked under Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn before pioneering a modernist and brutalist architecture in India that blended Indian heritage with contemporary practice, becoming known especially for low cost housing and sustainable design. His significant works include the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, the Indian Institute of Management Udaipur, the National Institute of Fashion Technology in Delhi, Amdavad ni Gufa, CEPT University and the Aranya Low Cost Housing development in Indore. In 2018 he became the first Indian architect to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize, and he also received India's Padma Shri in 1976, Padma Bhushan in 2020 and, posthumously, Padma Vibhushan in 2023, as well as the Royal Gold Medal in 2022.
