Barbara Kruger is an American conceptual artist born in 1945, known for a distinctive body of work combining found black-and-white photographs with bold captions, usually white Futura Bold Oblique text on a red background, addressing consumerism, power, identity and feminism, as in her widely reproduced 1987 work I Shop Therefore I Am. Trained initially as a graphic designer and picture editor at Conde Nast publications, she brought that commercial visual vocabulary directly into fine art, and her aesthetic has since been widely referenced across fashion and advertising.
