Bernard Leach was a British studio potter widely credited as a founding figure of the modern studio pottery movement in Britain. After years spent studying and working in Japan, where he absorbed traditional Japanese and Korean ceramic techniques and philosophy, he returned to England and founded the Leach Pottery at St Ives in Cornwall in 1920 alongside the Japanese potter Shoji Hamada. His 1940 book A Potter's Book became a foundational text for a generation of studio potters, setting out both practical technique and an aesthetic philosophy that valued handmade, functional stoneware over industrial ceramics. Leach's fusion of Western studio practice with East Asian craft traditions shaped how ceramics came to be understood as a serious artistic discipline rather than purely a decorative or industrial trade.
