Lorenzo Lotto (c. 1480-1556/1557) was an Italian Renaissance painter traditionally associated with the Venetian school, though he spent much of his career working in other cities of northern Italy. He specialized in altarpieces, religious subjects and portraits, and his work spans the High Renaissance and early Mannerist periods, marked by nervous, eccentric poses and distortions that bridged the two styles. After his death he was largely forgotten until the art historian Bernard Berenson revived interest in his work at the end of the nineteenth century.
