Chéri Chérin

Chéri Chérin, born Joseph Kinkonda, was a Congolese painter born on 16 February 1955 and died on 19 October 2025, known for depicting everyday life in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He trained at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Kinshasa and became, alongside Chéri Samba and Moke, one of the most popular artists of Kinshasa's contemporary painting scene. His work often carried political satire, which brought him difficulty during the presidency of Mobutu Sese Seko, and his paintings, including Lutte pour la survie of 2002, remain a record of Congolese daily life up to his death at the age of seventy.
