Constantin Brancusi was a Romanian sculptor who worked mainly in Paris and became one of the most influential pioneers of modern sculpture. Rejecting the detailed naturalism of his teacher Rodin, he pursued radical simplification, carving and casting forms such as Bird in Space and The Kiss down to their essential, often near-abstract geometric shape while insisting that this simplification revealed rather than obscured the subject's true essence. His polished bronze and carved stone and wood works, along with his practice of treating the base or pedestal as part of the sculptural composition itself, had a lasting influence on abstract and minimalist sculpture through the twentieth century.
