Eugene Atget (1857 to 1927) was a French flaneur and pioneer of documentary photography, determined to document the architecture and street scenes of Paris before they disappeared to modernization. He sold his work chiefly to artists and craftspeople and became an inspiration for the surrealists, but most of his photographs were first published only after his death, by Berenice Abbott, and he did not live to see the wide acclaim his work would eventually receive.
