Francisco Zuniga (1912-1998) was a Costa Rican-born sculptor and painter who became one of the leading figurative sculptors of twentieth-century Mexico, shaped by pre-Hispanic art and German Expressionism. His work centers on the human form, especially depictions of indigenous and mestiza women rendered in monumental, solid volumes evoking maternity and family. His sculptures are held in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
