Painters

Claude Monet was a French painter whose work gave Impressionism its name: a dismissive 1874 review of his painting Impression, Sunrise, exhibited at the first independent group show the Impressionists organized outside the official Paris Salon, coined the label the painters themselves later adopted. Monet pursued the effects of natural light and atmosphere across repeated series of the same motif painted at different times of day and season, water lilies, haystacks, Rouen Cathedral, and spent his final three decades developing an increasingly monumental garden and water-lily cycle at his home in Giverny, culminating in the large-scale Water Lilies panels now installed at the Musee de l'Orangerie in Paris.

FAQs

How did Impressionism get its name from Claude Monet?

Critics mocked Monet's Impression, Sunrise in 1874 and used its title as an insult that became the movement's name.

The name came from one of Monet's paintings. At an exhibition held in 1874 the work shown was greeted with derision, and Monet's Impression, Sunrise was particularly singled out for ridicule. Critics used the title as an insult, and it became the name of the movement.
