Claude Monet was a French painter whose work gave Impressionism its name: a dismissive 1874 review of his painting Impression, Sunrise, exhibited at the first independent group show the Impressionists organized outside the official Paris Salon, coined the label the painters themselves later adopted. Monet pursued the effects of natural light and atmosphere across repeated series of the same motif painted at different times of day and season, water lilies, haystacks, Rouen Cathedral, and spent his final three decades developing an increasingly monumental garden and water-lily cycle at his home in Giverny, culminating in the large-scale Water Lilies panels now installed at the Musee de l'Orangerie in Paris.
