Milton Ernest Robert Rauschenberg was an American painter and multi-media artist who lived from 1925 to 2008, and whose work has been associated with numerous mid-20th century art movements including the New York School, Conceptual Art, Pop art and Neo-Dada. He is well known for his Combines, made from 1954 to 1964, a group of artworks that incorporated everyday objects as art materials and blurred the distinctions between painting and sculpture. He was primarily a painter and a sculptor, but also worked with photography, printmaking, papermaking and performance, and his awards included the International Grand Prize in Painting at the 32nd Venice Biennale in 1964 and the National Medal of Arts in 1993.
