Erased de Kooning Drawing

Erased de Kooning Drawing is a 1953 conceptual work by the American artist Robert Rauschenberg, presenting an almost blank sheet of paper in a gilded frame. Rauschenberg created it by obtaining a drawing from the abstract expressionist artist Willem de Kooning and then erasing it by hand. His friend and fellow artist Jasper Johns later framed the erased sheet in a gilded frame and inscribed a caption reading Erased de Kooning Drawing, Robert Rauschenberg, 1953, styled to resemble the labeling conventions used for old master drawings and prints. The work has been in the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art since 1998, which describes it as a drawing carrying traces of drawing media on paper with a label and gilded frame.
