Giovanni Battista Piranesi, also known simply as Piranesi, was an Italian classical archaeologist, architect and artist who lived from 1720 to 1778, famous for his etchings of Rome and of fictitious and atmospheric "prisons" known as the Carceri d'invenzione. He was the father of the printmakers Francesco Piranesi, Laura Piranesi and Pietro Piranesi.
