Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Dore (1832 to 1883) was a French printmaker, illustrator, painter, comics artist, caricaturist and sculptor, best known for a prolific output of wood-engravings illustrating classic literature, especially the Vulgate Bible and Dante's Divine Comedy. He created more than 10,000 illustrations, normally serving as the designer while a team of block-cutters, some 40 at the height of his career, cut his drawings onto the printing blocks; his work was popular with the public in his lifetime and has been more widely celebrated by critics since his death, with admirers including the writers H. P. Lovecraft and Theophile Gautier.
