Hans Arp co-founded Dada in Zurich in 1916 together with Hugo Ball, Richard Huelsenbeck and Tristan Tzara, contributing collages, reliefs and poetry built on chance procedures he saw as a way to access what he called the basic ordering processes of the natural world, beyond conscious rational control. His torn-paper and wood-relief compositions, arranged according to the laws of chance, embodied Dada's rejection of deliberate, rational artistic composition. After Dada, Arp moved into Surrealism and Constructivism before turning primarily to freestanding sculpture from around 1930 onward, developing his organic Human Concretion forms.
