Hans Coper was an influential German-born British studio potter who lived from 8 April 1920 to 16 June 1981. His work is often paired with that of Lucie Rie because of their close association, even though their best-known pieces differ dramatically: Rie is less sculptural, while Coper is much more abstract, though always functional. Coper consistently made functional vessels, chiefly containers for flowers, fruit or candles, including commissioned work for Coventry Cathedral and the Sussex University meeting house, and in the 1950s he also made a small group of standing Figures that were not vessels and were never offered for sale.
