Honoré Daumier

Honore-Victorin Daumier was a French painter, sculptor and printmaker who lived from 1808 to 1879 and became known for social and political caricatures published in newspapers such as La Caricature and Le Charivari, targeting the monarchy, aristocracy, clergy and bourgeoisie from the 1830 Revolution through the fall of the Second Empire. A tireless and prolific artist, he produced more than one hundred sculptures, five hundred paintings, one thousand drawings, one thousand wood engravings and four thousand lithographs, though his paintings were largely ignored in his lifetime despite admiration from fellow artists and the critic Charles Baudelaire. A major exhibition in 1878, shortly before his death, brought late recognition, and he went on to influence the following generation of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters.
