Isamu Noguchi was an American sculptor, furniture designer and landscape architect who lived from 1904 to 1988, born in Los Angeles to a Japanese poet father and an American writer mother and raised partly in Japan. Across a six-decade career beginning in the 1920s he was described as a versatile and prolific sculptor whose earthy stones and meditative gardens bridge East and West, producing works such as Red Cube and Black Sun, the Akari light sculptures, a lounge table for Herman Miller, the Sapporo Moerenuma Park landscape and stage sets for Martha Graham. He received the National Medal of Arts in 1987.
