Jacob de Gheyn II, also written Jacques de Gheyn II, lived from about 1565 to 1629 and was a Dutch painter and engraver whose work shows the change from Northern Mannerism to Dutch realism. Born in Antwerp, he was first trained by his father, a glass painter and engraver, then studied in Haarlem under Hendrik Goltzius before settling in Leiden and later The Hague, where Prince Maurice of Orange employed him. He is credited with more than 1,500 drawings and produced 117 engravings for the military manual The Exercise of Armes. He also painted some of the earliest female nudes, vanitas pieces and floral still lifes in Dutch art.
