Jacob Epstein

Sir Jacob Epstein was an American and British sculptor who lived from 1880 to 1959 and helped pioneer modern sculpture, born in the United States before moving to Europe in 1902 and becoming a British subject in 1910. Revolting against ornate, pretty art, he made bold, often harsh and massive forms in bronze or stone, distinguished by vigorous rough-hewn realism, and his avant-garde works often shocked audiences both for their explicit sexual content and for abandoning the classical Greek conventions favored by European academic critics in favor of the aesthetics of Indian, Chinese, ancient Greek, West African and Pacific Island art traditions. Bronze portrait sculpture, often executed with roughly textured surfaces and expressive facial detail, formed one of his staple and best known products.
