Josiah Wedgwood was an English potter and entrepreneur who lived from 1730 to 1795. He founded the Wedgwood company in 1759 and developed improved pottery bodies through systematic experimentation, becoming the leader in the industrialisation of European pottery manufacture. Every new invention he produced, including green glaze, creamware, black basalt and jasperware, was quickly copied by rivals, and he made great efforts to keep his designs in tune with current fashion, opening London showrooms so the public could see his full range of tableware. He is credited as a pioneer of modern marketing, having pioneered direct mail, money-back guarantees, self-service, free delivery, buy one get one free, and illustrated catalogues to meet the demands of the consumer revolution.
