Lucas van Leyden was a Dutch painter and printmaker in engraving and woodcut who lived from 1494 to 1533. He was the son of the painter Huygh Jacobsz, and he was born, died and mainly worked in Leiden. He learned basic techniques from his father and from Cornelis Engelbrechtsz, but his precocious originality was paramount. He was among the first Dutch exponents of genre painting and was a very accomplished engraver, and Karel van Mander describes him as a tireless artist.
