Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898 to 1972) was a Dutch graphic artist who made woodcuts, lithographs and mezzotints, many inspired by mathematics. Despite wide popular interest he was largely neglected by the art world for most of his life, even in his native Netherlands, and did not receive a retrospective exhibition until he was seventy years old. He became far more widely appreciated in the late twentieth century, and in the twenty first century his work has been celebrated in exhibitions around the world.
