Marianne Brandt (1893 to 1983) was a German painter, sculptor, photographer, metalsmith and designer who studied at the Bauhaus art school in Weimar and became head of its Metal Workshop in Dessau in 1928. Although she pursued painting and sculpture early in her career, producing Expressionist work at the Grand Ducal College of Art in Weimar, she is best known for her sleek, elegant industrial designs for household objects such as lamps and ashtrays, today considered timeless examples of modern industrial design; she also worked in photography at the Bauhaus, taking self-portraits and photomontages that experimented with unusual angles and distorted reflections.
