Marietta Barovier

Marietta Barovier was a Venetian glass artist active by 1496, the daughter of the glass artist Angelo Barovier of Murano, who is credited with inventing cristallo glass. She and her brother Giovanni inherited the family workshop in 1460 and she managed it in collaboration with him; of fourteen specialist glass painters documented working between 1443 and 1516, she and Elena de Laudo were the only women. Her individual work cannot be clearly identified, but she is known to have created the glass beads called rosette or chevron beads in 1480, and in 1487 she was granted the privilege of building a special kiln for making her own unusual, unblown pieces.
