Mercier "Merce" Philip Cunningham (1919 to 2009) was an American dancer and choreographer at the forefront of American modern dance for more than 50 years, who frequently collaborated with musicians including John Cage, David Tudor and Brian Eno, and visual artists including Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Jasper Johns. As choreographer, teacher and leader of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company he had a profound influence on modern dance, and many dancers who trained with him formed their own companies; he received some of the highest honors bestowed in the arts, including the National Medal of Arts, a MacArthur Fellowship, Japan's Praemium Imperiale and a British Laurence Olivier Award.
