Nancy Goldin is an American photographer and activist born in Washington, D.C. in 1953 who documents intimate relationships and bohemian LGBT subcultures in a snapshot style, including the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s. Her best-known work, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, first shown as a slideshow and later published as a monograph in 1986, portrays her chosen family within post-punk and gay subcultures. She received the Hasselblad Award in 2007 and is also a founding member of the advocacy group P.A.I.N., which campaigns against the opioid epidemic.
