Norman Foster

Architects and Designers

Norman Foster is a British architect and founder of the firm Foster and Partners, and a recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1999. He is closely associated with the high tech architecture movement, which foregrounds structure and building systems, typically expressed through steel, glass and exposed engineering, as part of a building's visible design rather than concealing it. Major works include 30 St Mary Axe in London, widely known by its nickname the Gherkin, the glass dome added to the rebuilt Reichstag in Berlin, and Hong Kong International Airport, each pairing large scale engineering ambition with an emphasis on natural light and energy efficiency. Foster's practice has become one of the largest and most internationally active architecture firms in the world, working across skyscrapers, airports, bridges and museums.
