Norman Rockwell was an American painter and illustrator best known for the 322 cover illustrations he produced for The Saturday Evening Post over forty-seven years, alongside decades of work for Boys' Life and, later, Look magazine. His covers and illustrations, including the Willie Gillis series, Rosie the Riveter, and the wartime Four Freedoms series, depicted everyday American life with warmth and careful narrative detail, a style that reached enormous popular audiences even as some critics dismissed it as overly sentimental. In his later career at Look, Rockwell turned to more direct social commentary, including The Problem We All Live With, a 1964 painting addressing school desegregation; across a lifetime that produced more than four thousand original works, he became one of the most widely recognized visual chroniclers of American popular culture.
