Odilon Redon, born Bertrand Redon in Bordeaux in 1840 and active until his death in 1916, was a French Symbolist draftsman, printmaker and painter who served in the Franco-Prussian War before building his career in Paris. His early work, dark charcoal drawings and lithographs he called his noirs, gave way after 1890 to pastel and oil paintings influenced by Japanese art and Buddhist themes; he gained wide recognition after being featured in Joris-Karl Huysmans's 1884 novel A rebours and is considered a precursor to Surrealism. He received the Legion of Honour in 1903 and showed prominently at the 1913 Armory Show.
