Paul Strand (1890 to 1976) was an American photographer and filmmaker who, together with fellow modernist photographers such as Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Weston, helped establish photography as a fine art in the twentieth century. In 1936 he helped found the Photo League, a cooperative of photographers organized around shared social and creative causes. His body of work, spanning six decades, covers many genres and subjects across the Americas, Europe and Africa.
