Bissano Ram Gopal was an Indian dancer and choreographer who lived from 20 November 1912 to 12 October 2003, who alongside Uday Shankar pioneered bringing Indian classical dance to Western audiences beginning in the 1930s. Trained in Kathakali, Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Manipuri dance, he blended classical Indian styles with folk traditions and balletic choreography, becoming known for productions including Legend of the Taj Mahal and Dances of India, and for a celebrated 1960 duet, Radha-Krishna, with British ballerina Alicia Markova. He received an OBE in 1999 for services to dance and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1990.
