Sebastiao Ribeiro Salgado Junior was a Brazilian social documentary photographer and photojournalist who lived from 1944 to 2025 and worked across more than 120 countries. His major bodies of work include The Other Americas, Sahel, Workers, Migrations and Genesis, along with photographs of Brazil's Serra Pelada gold mine made between 1986 and 1989, and he received the Hasselblad Award in 1989 and the Prince of Asturias Award in Arts in 1998. He and his wife also founded Instituto Terra, which has worked since the 1990s to reforest 17,000 acres of Brazil's Atlantic Forest.
