Tatsumi Hijikata was a Japanese choreographer who lived from 9 March 1928 to 21 January 1986 and founded the genre of dance performance art known as Butoh. By the late 1960s he had developed a highly choreographed style using stylized gestures drawn from his own childhood memories of his home region in northern Japan, and it is this style that is most often associated with Butoh by audiences outside Japan.
