Uday Shankar was an Indian dancer and choreographer who lived from 8 December 1900 to 26 September 1977, credited as a pioneer of modern dance in India for creating a fusion style that adapted European theatrical techniques to Indian classical, folk and tribal dance. He gained international prominence in the 1920s and 1930s performing across Europe and America, including a notable collaboration with Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova on the ballet Radha-Krishna. He founded the Uday Shankar India Cultural Centre in Almora in 1938 and received India's Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1962 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1971.
