Vann Nath

Vann Nath (1946-2011) was a Cambodian painter, sculptor, writer and human rights activist. He was one of only seven adults known to have survived imprisonment at the Khmer Rouge's S-21 prison camp, where an estimated 20,000 Cambodians were tortured and killed, and his paintings and memoir documenting that experience stand as testimony to those crimes. He won the Lillian Hellman/Hammett Award for his writing, and he collaborated with filmmaker Rithy Panh on the documentary S-21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine, in which he confronted former guards from the prison.
