Vivian Dorothy Maier was an American street photographer who lived from 1926 to 2009, working for about forty years as a nanny while privately taking more than 150,000 photographs, chiefly of people and architecture in Chicago, New York City and Los Angeles. Her work remained unknown until 2007, when her negatives and prints were auctioned after she could no longer pay for storage; collector John Maloof shared images online in 2009 and they became a viral phenomenon, leading to worldwide exhibitions and the Academy Award-nominated documentary Finding Vivian Maier.
